Investment Strategy: The Little Book That Beats the Market

math.jpgJoel Greenblatt teaches at Columbia University in New York City. He also wrote the enormously successful "The Little Book That Beats the Market". Following his strategy from 1988 to 2004 you would've earned an annualized return of 31% so there seems to be something to it. That's about 2 and a half times what the S&P 500 returned. Best of all, Joel keeps a free stock screener on his site!

Summer Vacations for Single Parents

singleparent.png
Single parents make up 10% of the families in the U.S. and yet the travel industry is just beginning to recognize that we too like to take fun family vacations with our children. One big challenge is that single parents have single incomes, so frugal travel is essential. But that's not the only consideration. Some "family packages" will separate the parent and child for the vacation, sending the kid off to play with other kids in a glorified daycare while the parent plays golf or lays in a deck chair. This is great for the parent that gets quality time on a daily basis, but single parents look forward to spending time with the kids while on vacation. Fear not, single parents have a champion in Brenda Elwell and her website Single Parent Travel .

Inflation Turns $46,609 into $18,061

math.jpgWe all know the depressing math. If you would have saved $10,000 20 years ago and if it returned an average rate of 8%, you'd be sitting on $46,609 today. Or would you? The answer is no.

Shopping for Frugal Families, One View

Getting Around the Airlines' New Minimum Stay Requirement

airplanesmall.jpgIn yet another attempt to offset the rising cost of fuel, almost all major airlines, including American Airlines, Continental , Delta, Northwest and United , will start charging passengers extra for tickets that do not include a Saturday night stay-over or a stay that doesn't entail a minimum number of nights.

The article itself says to be wary of back to back ticketing but if two carriers compete head to head with nonstops, like American and United do between New York and Chicago for example, book one on each. Alternatively just book Southwest whenever possible.

Combatting high NSF bank fees

With bank non-sufficient funds (NSF) charges now creeping up to nearly $40.00 you can't afford to bounce a check. Banks have long since discovered that they can make a ton of money by honoring your check and then charging you a hefty NSF fee. The easiest thing to do is to not bounce a check of course, but there are places to keep your money that have cheaper NSF fees, namely credit unions.

How One NSF Fee can Turn Into Three

Banks are under no obligation to process checks in numeric order. Let's say that you have enough money in your account to cover two of three checks and fully expect the last one to bounce. If all three checks show up on the same day at the bank, you could get bounced on all three.

Return of the zombie debt

Have an old debt that you thought was out of your life? Get a call out of the blue asking you to settle a debt that's old? Beware. Scavenger collector firms will oftentimes buy old debt for as little as a penny on the dollar and then try to collect. Be very careful because you could be back on the hook.
